Cliff Richard – famous British singer
Sir Cliff Richard is a British pop singer. He is called the king of the British charts.
Harry Rodger Webb (his real name) was born on October 14, 1940 in Lucknow, India. When Harry was seven years old his family moved to the UK. In adolescence, Harry became interested in sports – football, basketball, and javelin. But rock music became the most important passion in his life. He was keen on Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley didn’t perform outside the United States, but when another legendary rock ‘n’ roll singer Bill Haley visited England, Harry ran away from school to visit his concert.
In 1958 he signed a contract with EMI and began his solo musical career. He was one of the first who performed rock ‘n’ roll on the British scene.
In 1959, Richard acted in the movie Serious Charge, where he played a small role of the leader of pop group. In the same year he starred in Expresso Bongo.
Cliff usually performed with The Shadows. They recorded two of his most popular hits Livin ‘Lovin’ Doll (1959) and The Young Ones (1961).
In 1958 Cliff won the title of “the best English singer”. But then came the era of THE BEATLES, ROLLING STONES, etc.
Cliff represented his country at Eurovision twice: in 1968 he took the second place with the song Congratulations and in 1973 he took the third place with the song Power to all our friends.
Richard also participated in musicals.
His fiftieth hit “Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha” was released in 1970.
His single Devil Woman released in 1976 became his first (and only) hit in the US. Then followed We Do not Talk Anymore (1st place in the UK) and Suddenly (duet with Olivia Newton-John). In 1976 he made a tour in the Soviet Union, gave 12 concerts in Leningrad and 8 in Moscow.
In 1980 Cliff Richard was awarded the Order of the British Empire.
In 1989, Cliff released his hundredth single with the symbolic title The Best Of Me.
In 2002 he became one of the 100 Greatest Britons according to BBC.
In 1993 Richard became an owner of vineyards in the south of Portugal.
Cliff Richard has managed to survive all the mania and hobbies and stay in the first echelon of popular music. His career has been continuing for 45 years – it is a unique phenomenon.
