Richard Gere – American actor
Richard Gere is an American actor, winner of numerous awards, including Golden Globe (2003).
Richard Tiffany Gere was born on August 31, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Homer George Gere, was an insurance agent in the Nationwide Insurance Company. His mother, Doris Anna Tiffany was a housewife. Richard has three sisters, brother Sam Geer and half-brother Herman Henry Januszewski. The boy grew up in a suburb of New York City, on a village farm. After graduating from school in 1967, he went to the University of Massachusetts to study philosophy. Two years later he left the University and seriously decided to become a professional trumpet player. Gere settled in the commune of rock musicians in Vermont, but once understood that the musicians were even more capricious than the actors and left them. Gere was a talented gymnast and even received a scholarship to college.
In 1974, Richard was supposed to appear in the film The Lords of Flatbush, in the low-budget American film about a gang, where young still unknown Sylvester Stallone also got the role. Gere was approved for the role of Chico, but he and Stallone often argued and as a result, the director replaced Gere.
In 1975, Richard got the main role in Shepard’s play Head of a Killer. Director Richard Brooks became interested in young actor. In 1977, Gere was offered a small role in the film Looking for Mr. Goodbar.
In 1979, he played in the film American Gigolo and became a new sex symbol. In the mid-1980s Gere became one of the leading masters of Hollywood.
In 1990, Gere played one of his most famous roles. It was the film Pretty Woman where he starred together with Julia Roberts. Since that time Gere appeared in respectable films such as 1993’s Sommersby (the remake of the French film The Return of Martin Guerre), and thrillers such as Primal Fear (1996) and The Jackal (1997). His “heart project” was Red Corner (1997).
In 1999, People magazine named Gere Sexiest Man Alive.
The role in the musical Chicago brought Gere Golden Globe and the US Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 1999, Gere founded his own foundation, which helps various humanitarian programs in India.
At the age of 22 he began dating actress Penelope Milford. They were together for five years. Then he had a relationship with Brazilian painter Sylvia Martins.
In 1991 the actor married supermodel Cindy Crawford. Gere was 42 and Crawford was 25 years old. They parted in 1995.
In 2002-2013 he was officially married to actress and former model Carey Lowell. Their son was born in 2000.
