Timothy Theodore Duncan was born on April 25, 1976. His father, a mason, worked a variety of jobs, and his mother was a midwife. Together with his parents and elder sisters, Cheryl and Tricia, he lived in Christiansted, a town on Santa Cruz Island, one of the main islands belonging to the US Virgin Islands. At school Duncan was a good student and dreamed of becoming a swimmer like his sister Tricia. Tricia represented the Virgin Islands in the 100- and 200- meter backstroke in the 1988 Olympics, and Duncan holds the Virgin Islands record in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events and was a nationally ranked swimmer in the United States in the 400-meter freestyle by the age of thirteen. With good results, the young man even wanted to participate in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona as part of the US team. However, in 1989 Hurricane Hugo destroyed the only fifty-meter pool and Duncan had to swim in the open ocean. Tim was very afraid of sharks so he gave up swimming. Duncan decided to play basketball.
