Jane Birkin – Anglo-French actress
Jane Birkin is an Anglo-French actress and singer. She is known for long personal and creative union with French singer, actor and director Serge Gainsbourg. She is a mother of Anglo-French actresses and singers: Kate Barry (photographer and actress, born in 1967 – died on December 11, 2013), Charlotte Gainsbourg (actress and singer, born in 1971) and Lou Doillon (actress, model and singer, born in 1982).
Jane Mallory Birkin was born on December 14, 1946 in London. She was born to military man David Birkin and actress Judy Campbell. She has elder brother Andrew Birkin, who later became a famous film director (The Cement Garden) and screenwriter (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer).
At the age of 17 Jane debuted on the stage of London’s Haymarket Theater, where she played a young deaf-mute girl in the play Carving a Statue by Graham Greene.
19-year-old Jane married popular composer John Barry (author of the theme song for the James Bond films). In 1967 she gave birth to their daughter Kate who became a successful photographer of celebrities. After their divorce Birkin and her daughter moved to France. On December 11, 2013 46-year-old Kate committed suicide.
After a modest debut role in the movie The Knack, Birkin played in the cult film by Michelangelo Antonioni, winner of the Cannes Film Festival, Blow-up (1967). The following year she got a leading role in the film Slogan, although she did not speak French. On the set of the film she met Serge Gainsbourg and fell in love at first sight. They became the most fashionable couple of France. In 1969 they released their joint single Je t’aime … moi non plus which became the best-selling song of the year in France and the hurricane hit across Europe. In 1971 their daughter Charlotte was born. Now she is a popular actress and singer. Gainsbourg and Birkin’s marriage lasted for 12 years, but the creative union of the composer and his muse lasted until his death in 1991.
Shortly before the break up with Gainsbourg Jane starred in La fille prodigue by cult director Jacques Doillon, who fell in love with the actress. Their daughter Lou Doillon was born in 1982. Now she is a famous actress and singer.
Jane starred in more than thirty films.
The last 30 years, Jane lives in Paris, on the left bank of the Seine.
