Meryl Streep is an American film and stage actress. She embodied an increasing realism for female characters in major studio films. She is one of the most gifted film actresses of the late 20th century. Streep is three-time Oscar winner (with 19 nominations – more than any other actor or actress in the history of cinema).
Meryl Louise Streep was born on June 22, 1949 in Summit, New Jersey. Her mother was a commercial artist and her father a pharmaceutical executive. She has two younger brothers.
She started acting at Bernards High School. She was a swimmer who later became a cheerleader in high school.
Meryl studied at Vassar, Dartmouth and at the prestigious Yale Drama School. She appeared in more than three dozen productions with the Yale Repertory Theater. She appeared at the Public Theater in the musical Alice in Concert.
In 1977 she was nominated for a Tony Award for Tennessee Williams’s 27 Wagons Full of Cotton.
In the same year Streep made her debut in Robert Markowitz’s The Deadliest Season. That year she also appeared onscreen for the first time in Fred Zinnmann’s Julia (1977) as Anna Marie.

In 1978, she won an Emmy Award for playing a Jewish woman persecuted by the Nazis in the TV miniseries Holocaust. In the same year she was nominated for an Academy Award.
Woody Allen cast her as his hostile ex-wife in Manhattan.

In 1981 she was nominated again for an Academy Award for a supporting role in The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
In 1982 she won the Academy Award as Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice.
Thanks to her role in the biographical picture Silkwood she was among the Best Actress nominees on Oscar night.
The comic romance Heartburn was filmed while the actress was pregnant.
In 2004 Streep won an Emmy for her participation in longtime friend and collaborator Mike Nichols’ Angels in America.
Throughout her career Streep has been nominated for and received many prestigious awards. In 1997 she received the first Bette Davis Lifetime Achievement Award; the Women in Film’s Crystal Award; the prestigious Silver Medallion at Telluride Film Festival’s 25th Anniversary Celebration; and in 1998 received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; on February 14, 2012 she was awarded the honorary prize of the Berlin Film Festival – Golden Bear.

She fell in love with actor John Cazale. They never married, but she cared for him until he died of cancer in 1978. A few months later, she married sculptor Don Gummer. They have four children.
