Moby – Richard Melville Hall
Moby is an American DJ, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist working in different genres – from electronics to pop, rock and punk. His real name is Richard Melville Hall.
When I hear Moby I immediately think of Moby Dick, a novel by American classic Herman Melville. In fact, Herman Melville is Richard Hall’s great-great granduncle.
Moby is a spectacled bald guy who creates fantastic electronic music. He mixes different genres: trash, break-beat, ambient, dance-pop and creates a masterpiece.
He has a phenomenal sense of rhythm. One of his singles (Thousand) was even put into the Guinness Book as the fastest single ever, approximately clocking in at 1000 beats a minute.
Moby was born in New York on September 11, 1965, but grew up in Darien, Connecticut. When he was two years old, his father died in a car accident and the boy was raised by his mother.
He plays keyboard instrument, guitar, bass guitar and drum kit.
In the early years he played in hardcore punk band The Vatican Commandos, but in 1989 he changed punk to electronic music.
The first album, which contained 12 songs, was released in 1992.
Among the well-known Moby’s songs are Extreme ways (gained wide popularity after the use in the film The Bourne Identity), Go, Porcelain, Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?, Natural Blues, Lift Me Up .
He also released albums under the names Voodoo Child, Schaumgummi, Barracuda, UHF, The Brotherhood, DJ Cake, Lopez and Brainstorm / Mindstorm.
In total, about 20 million copies of his albums, singles are sold around the world.
Moby also remixed Michael Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Orbital.
He is known as a fervent vegetarian. He is certain that a cow or a hen has the same sacred right for life as we do. He even called one of his albums Animal Rights (1996). He is a member of several organizations which fight for the rights of animals.
Moby works all by himself. The studio where he is working now is equipped in his house. The studio became a kind of microcosm protecting Moby from harmful outer influence.
For his music he draws inspiration from nature. He likes gazing at the stars.
