Winona Ryder – beautiful actress
Winona Ryder is an American actress and producer. She was nominated for Oscar twice for her roles in the films The Age of Innocence (1993) and Little Women (1994). In 1994 she was awarded Golden Globe for her role in Little Women. Winona is the owner of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Winona Laura Horowitz (her real name) was born on October 29, 1971 in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Winona’s father is a descendant of the Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire and Romania. Michael Horowitz was a writer. Her mother was also engaged in literary activities and she had two children from a previous marriage: daughter and son. Winona’s parents officially married when she was 12 years old. Later, her younger brother, Uri Horowitz, named in honor of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was born.
Since 1978, when the girl was seven years old, she lived with her family in an agricultural commune Rainbow in northern California. There was no electricity and TV and Winona was fond of reading. Her favorite book was The Catcher in the Rye by Jerome Salinger.
When Winona was 10, her parents moved to Petaluma (California). Since 1983, 12-year-old Winona attended acting classes at the American Conservatory Theater, located in San Francisco. In 1986, director David Seltzer invited Winona to play in his film Lucas. Winona chose a stage name Ryder.
The Los Angeles Times called her performance in the film Quadrille (1987) “a remarkable debut”. Rob Lowe, who played her weak-minded friend, was nominated for Golden Globe.
Her first notable role was in Tim Burton’s comedy Beetlejuice (1988), where she played a “gothic” Woman able to see ghosts. In another film, 1969 (1988), the actress played the young anti-war activist together with Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Downey Jr.
In 1989, Ryder starred in the film Great Balls of Fire and won her first professional award – Young Artist Award. In April 1989, Ryder was involved in the filming of the music video for Mojo Nixon’s Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child.
In 1990, Ryder appeared in three films. She played the lead role in Burton’s film Edward Scissorhands. Johnny Depp, her partner in the film, became her boyfriend.
For her role in the film Mermaids, where Cher and Christina Ricci also played, Ryder was nominated for Golden Globe. Later, along with Cher and Ricci, she appeared in the video for the song The Shoop Shoop Song.
In House of the Spirits (1993), film adaptation of the novel by Isabel Allende, she played with Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close, and Antonio Banderas.
For her role in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence (1993) Ryder won Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for Oscar. In 1994 she starred in Little Women, the film adaptation of the novel by American writer Louisa May Alcott. The role earned her a nomination for Oscar. In the same year she starred in Ben Stiller’s comedy Reality Bites.
In 1995, Ryder voiced Anne Frank’s diary, and was nominated for Grammy.
In 1998, Ryder was a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1999, Ryder starred in the drama Girl, Interrupted, where Ryder was an executive producer. Angelina Jolie who played an aggressive patient received Oscar and Golden Globe.
In 2000, Ryder starred in the melodrama Autumn in New York with Richard Gere.
On October 6, 2000 Ryder received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to cinema.
After a long break, Ryder appeared in the 2006 Richard Linklater’s animated film A Scanner Darkly, based on the novel by Philip K. Dick. In January 2007 The Darwin Awards and The Ten Commandments were premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
In 2009, Ryder appeared in the films Stay Cool with Hilary Duff and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee with Keanu Reeves.
In 2010, Winona appeared in the movie When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild and Satellite Award for Best Actress. That same year, the actress played the role of an aging prima ballerina in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.
In 2013 Ryder starred with James Franco and Jason Statham in the film The Last Frontier.
Personal life
From 1989 to 1993, Ryder was in a romantic relationship with Johnny Depp. “When I met Winona and we fell in love, it was absolutely like nothing before. We hung out the whole day… and night, and we’ve been hanging out ever since. I love her more than anything in the whole world.”
Five months after they met, Johnny gave Winona an engagement ring, and a month later, the couple were living together, even if it was in a succession of hotels and rented apartments.
Later she had a love affair with Dave Pirner, participant of Soul Asylum.
From 1998 to 2000, she dated Matt Damon.
Now her boyfriend is fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn.
