Benedict Cumberbatch – British actor
Benedict Cumberbatch is a British theater, cinema and television actor. He is a winner of the Laurence Olivier Award (2012) and Emmy Award (2014), two-time nominee for Golden Globe and also was nominated for Oscar. In 2015 Benedict became Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Cumberbatch is best known for his roles of Sherlock Holmes in the series Sherlock (2010), Khan Noonien Singh in the science fiction film Star Trek: Nemesis (2013), journalist Julian Assange in the biographical thriller The Fifth Estate (2013) and the mathematician Alan Turing the historical drama The Imitation Game (2014). In 2016 the actor played the main role in the fantasy film Doctor Strange.
Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976 in London, UK. He is a son of actors Timothy Carlton (full name Timothy Carlton Congdon Cumberbatch) and Wanda Ventham, a descendant of King Edward III of the Plantagenet dynasty.
Cumberbatch studied at the prestigious Harrow School in north-west London, where he first came on the scene. He was involved in numerous productions of Shakespeare’s plays. Benedict’s acting debut was at the age of 12 when he played the role of Titania, queen of the fairies, in the play Midsummer Night’s Dream.
After school, Benedict spent his gap year teaching English in a Tibetan monastery in Darjeeling, India. After that Cumberbatch entered the Manchester University and then the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Since 2001, Cumberbatch acted in classic plays in the open-air theater in Regent’s Park, Almeida theaters, Royal Court and the Royal National Theatre. He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his role in Hedda Gabler.
In 2004, he played the role of Stephen Hawking in Hawking and was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Actor and received Golden Nymph for Best Actor in a TV movie.
In 2005, Cumberbatch played Edmund Talbot in the mini-series To the Ends of the Earth based on trilogy by William Golding.
Benedict also appeared in a comedy sketch show Broken News in 2005. Then he starred in the television adaptation of the book Stuart: Past Life.
In 2006, Cumberbatch played the role of William Pitt in the movie Amazing Grace. It brought the actor a nomination for London Society of Film Critics’ award for the Breakthrough of the Year.
In 2008 he starred in the BBC mini-series The Last Enemy and was nominated for Satellite Award. In the same year he played in a film-fantasy Dark Side of the Earth.
In 2009, he starred in Agatha Christie’s Marple: Murder Is Easy.
In 2010, Cumberbatch played Vincent van Gogh in the film Painted with Words. In 2012 he played the main role in the television series Parade’s End.
In 2013, he could be heard in the film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, where he played the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer. It was his second collaboration with Martin Freeman (after Sherlock), who playd Bilbo Baggins in the film.
In the same year he participated in the filming of the movie August: Osage County based on the play by American playwright Tracy Letts. In the film The Fifth Estate he played the role of journalist and founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange.
In 2014, he played the role of Alan Turing in the historical drama The Imitation Game.
Benedict likes traveling, scuba diving and skydiving.
For more than 12 years Benedict dated actress Olivia Poulet. They broke up in January 2011.
The actor had a love affair with designer Anna Jones. They separated in 2011, a few months after they met.
On November 5, 2014 Benedict’s parents reported that their son was engaged to Sophie Hunter. On February 14, 2015 they got married. On June 1, 2015 their son Christopher Carlton Cumberbatch was born. On October 21, 2016 it was reported that the couple was expecting the second child.
