Jared Leto – actor and rock singer
Jared Leto is an American actor and rock singer, lead singer of alternative rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars. He is the director of many music videos under the pseudonym Bartholomew Cubbins (the name is borrowed from the book by Dr. Seuss The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins). Jared is a winner of many awards, including Oscar, Golden Globe and the US Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in the drama Dallas Buyers Club (2013).
Jared Joseph Leto was born on December 26, 1971 in Bossier City, Louisiana. He has elder brother Shannon. Their parents divorced when Jared and Shannon were little boys. Shortly after the second marriage their father died (two boys were born in marriage). Second mother’s husband, Carl Leto, adopted them, although they later divorced. Jared has half-sister Melissa Lafsky, who is a writer.
At the age of 12, he got his first job – a dishwasher in a small diner in Virginia, and at the age of 16 he worked as a doorman. In the early years of his life, Jared traveled with his family. After school he entered the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Later, Jared transferred to the University of Fine Arts in New York. As a student, he wrote the script and played a major role in his own film Crying Joy.
In 1994 he starred together with Alicia Silverstone in the film Cool and the Crazy, but his first role on the big screen was in the film How to Make an American Quilt (1995) in which he played with Winona Ryder. In 1997, Jared played in the movie Prefontaine, the life history of the legendary runner Steve Prefontaine.
In 1998 Jared appeared in Terrence Malick’s film The Thin Red Line together with Nick Nolte, George Clooney and Sean Penn.
In 1999 he played in the films Fight Club and Girl, Interrupted. The next year he appeared in American Psycho and Requiem for a Dream.
He also starred in Oliver Stone’s historical epic Alexander, international thriller Lord of War and the drama Chapter 27 about the killer of John Lennon – Mark Chapman. In 2009, Leto appeared on the screen in the film Mr. Nobody.
In 2011, he starred in advertisement of fragrance Just Different by Hugo Boss.
In 2013, Leto played in the drama Dallas Buyers Club and was awarded Oscar and other awards, including Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 2014, he received the role of Joker in the film adaptation of the comic book Suicide Squad (2016).
In 1998 Leto and his brother Shannon founded band 30 Seconds to Mars. Their first album was recorded in 2002. The release of the second album, A Beautiful Lie, was in 2005. On December 8, 2009 their third album This Is War was released. The fourth studio album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams, was released on May 21, 2013.
